NZWEA Welcomes Fast Track Approvals Bill Renewable Energy Announcement

The New Zealand Wind Energy Association (NZWEA) welcomes the Government’s announcement that 7 wind energy projects are to be included as part of Schedule 2A of the Fast-Track Approvals Bill.

“NZWEA CEO Kevin Hart said “not only is it pleasing to see 22 renewable energy projects included in the Fast Track Schedule, but wind energy is firmly recognised as a critical renewable energy solution that Aotearoa New Zealand requires to help address its energy security issues.

In total, there are 27 wind energy projects with a combined 3.9GW of potential grid capacity being progressed by the sector, of which 1.36 GW is now advancing under the Fast-Track process. If approved, these 7 wind farms will produce up to 4,600 GWh/y in delivered electricity, doubling the current wind energy generated on the grid.

Once operational, these wind farms will supply up to 554,000 NZ households with 100% renewable energy and help advance Aotearoa New Zealand’s overall renewable energy and net zero emissions targets.

We congratulate NZWEA member companies, Manawa Energy, Mercury Energy, and Pioneer Energy, whose projects will be progressed under the Fast-Track Approvals Bill.

This is a great outcome for the New Zealand wind energy sector, and the renewable energy industry as a whole”
