The paper looked at how diversity, both in technology type and location, might assist with reducing the inherent intermittency of the various generation types, in particular wind and solar.
The variability of most renewable generation (i.e. wind, solar, and hydro, but not geothermal) will create some significant challenges as New Zealand transitions to an electricity system with very high levels of renewables. It will need to manage periods of low generation, particularly if they coincide with periods of high demand.
