Contact Energy application for resource consent to build Waitahora wind farm in the Puketoi Range, near Dannevirke in Southern Hawke’s Bay, was declined in April 2009. Contact has appealed this decision to the Environment Court.
The application was publicly notified in September 2008, and public submissions closed on 30 October 2008. The consent hearing was held in February 2009. Dates for the Environment Court hearing are yet to be set.
The wind farm could have up to 65 wind turbines, with a combined installed capacity of 177 megawatts. The proposed wind farm has the potential to generate around 700 gigawatt hours per year, which is the amount of electricity used by around 86,000 average homes.
