Meridian Energy is planning to build a wind farm on a small but exceptionally windy site 5km from Eketahuna in the Northern Wairarapa.
The wind farm would have 20 turbines and link into the existing electricity grid nearby.
Three years of monitoring has confirmed the site has consistently high wind speeds, making it ideal for generating electricity.
Local and landowner consultation has already taken place, along with information days in the nearby town. Sheep and beef farming would continue on the wind farm site once developed.
Meridian plan to ship in some wind farm components and transport by road from the port of Napier during wind farm construction.
Resource consent was applied for in January 2012.
