The final decision of the Board of Enquiry to approve the Turitea wind farm in the Manawatu is good news for New Zealand’s push towards 90% renewable electricity, says of the New Zealand Wind Energy Association CEO Eric Pyle.
“This is the second recent wind farm approval, coming three weeks after the Environment Court decision on Mill Creek near Wellington,” comments Eric Pyle. “It adds another option for future development of clean, renewable energy in the future.”
The New Zealand Energy Strategy aims for 90% renewable electricity by 2025, up from around 75% today says Eric Pyle. “Wind energy is well positioned to fill that energy gap as it provides a cost effective form of new electricity generation. We can see wind moving from 4% of New Zealand’s electricity, up to around 20% in the next fifteen years.”
