The Wind Energy Association welcomes the start of work today on Meridian Energy’s West Wind project near Wellington.
Prime Minister Helen Clark will officially launch work on the West Wind project near Makara west of Wellington this morning.
NZ Wind Energy Association Chief Executive Fraser Clark said the West Wind development’s 62 wind turbines are another step in New Zealand’s march towards a sustainable energy future.
“West Wind shows the future for wind energy in New Zealand is increasingly positive,” Mr Clark said.
“Wind currently provides only around 1.5 percent of our total energy requirements but New Zealand’s wind energy potential is world class.”
Mr Clark said West Wind will help meet the goal, unveiled by the Government last week, of generating 90 per cent of our electricity from renewable sources by 2025.
“All power consumers look forward to moves to encourage wind power projects that are expected to form part of the Government’s up-coming New Zealand Energy Strategy announcement.”
